Roosh ha Niqraa

Blessed with remarkable natural beauty, Roosh ha Niqraa is a border post between Israel and Lebanon on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Alexander the Great dug a tunnel through the cliff in 332 BC, to build a road for his army that was besieging Tyre. In the 1930’s and 1940’s the famous Orient Express train included a route to Cairo via Istanbul, passing through the tunnel of Roosh ha Niqraa. The railway bridge at Roosh ha Niqraa was destroyed by Jews in 1948 during the war of independence, to neutralize the risk of enemy armies having easy access through the tunnel.
